[Connelly*H-MA] ~ 1251 LIBYA Tripoli, APR 16 0406 - Armchair signal with man in AA giving a dramatic talk. Don't know why this station did so poorly when I was over in Greece, or why I wasn't hearing other Libyans. [Dangerfield-PA] (I read in NASWA that they have been doing improvements on SW, so maybe also on MW - Jim) MAY 31 0344 - man in AA; to fair peak over other. [Connelly*D-MA] ~ 1521 SAUDI ARABIA, BSKSA Duba JUN 7 0240 - Strong open carrier and het against WWKB-1520, lost by 0300 after transmitter site sunrise. [Connelly*H-MA] JUN 7 0300 - Fair; "This is the Voice of America, Washington DC, signing on," Yankee Doodle IS, and news in English, // 7290. [Conti-NH] ~ 1544 ALGERIA - CLANDESTINE, Tindouf, JUN 1 0048 - plaintive / bluesy female vocal; good when the WDCD slop let up. [Connelly*D-MA] ~ 1548 KUWAIT-VOA, APR 16 0037 & APR 17 0130 - Very strong on each occasion with the usual slow-speaking American news summaries. The reception on 4/16 was well before dawn in Kuwait. [Dangerfield-PA] ~ 1566 IRAN Bandar Abbas [tent], APR 17 0137 - Good signal with man chanting Quran, then at 0141 man speaking what I think was Persian [Farsi] until just before 0200 when the signal faded. Bandar Abbas is only 550 miles across the Gulf from Kuwait which was very strong at the time. I do not think the station I heard was Nagpur, India due to various factors though of course I could be wrong! The Iranian is much more likely to have an Islamic program at the period of the Haj [Mecca pilgrimage]. There was no sign of the Swiss station until later in the evening. [Dangerfield-PA] (See notes below - Jim) ~ 1566 SWITZERLAND, R. Eviva, Sarnen, JUN 1 0130 - GG-sounding choral vocal, slightly over other. I'm not sure who the other major players are on the channel at this time in June. [Connelly*D-MA] ~ 1575 SPAIN, SER synchros, JUN 1 0046 - // 1044 & 1584 with SS newstalk; fair to good. [Connelly*D-MA] ~ 1584 SPAIN, SER synchros, JUN 1 0046 - // 1044 & 1575 with SS newstalk; poor to fair. [Connelly*D-MA] ~ Ben speaks (but unfortunately not in Farsi!): "Did anyone happen to be listening on Wed. APR 16 [Thurs APR 17 after 0130 GMT] to the high end of the band? First I found VOA Kuwait-1548 with an armchair signal at 0130, then on tuning to 1566 heard a man chanting, Koran or Quran, followed by a man speaking in a language that was not AA. First I thought this might be India, but knowing that India is not a Moslem country and that their AIR programs don't emphasize religion, Hindu if anything, I was inclined to decide the station I was hearing was the Iranian broadcasting a special in connection with the Mecca pilgrimage. Besides the program content was unlike that which I have heard on other occasions from India-5010, a SW // I was not able to get this time. Also, Bandar Abbas, Iran, is just 550 miles across the Gulf from Kuwait. The signal faded by 0300 and later the dominant station on 1566 was Beromunster." (A very interesting logging! This could be the Bandar-Abbas "pest" that we heard in Newfoundland while listening to India. However there is a report ciculating that an Iraqi opposition station previously heard on 1526-1539 kHz at the beginning of March has settled on 1566 - Jim) ~ Mark speaks: "Conditions to southern Europe and North Africa have been holding up rather well as we approach the longest day of the year. "Big gun" TA signals are showing up about an hour before sunset and strengths tend to peak between 0030 and 0230 UTC. Stations far to the west and south (Azores, Canaries, etc.) can still present listenable audio as late as 0430 UTC or after. There is always an advantage to listening right at the seashore: the benefits are even more evident during the marginal propagation conditions of spring and summer. Latin Americans (beyond the most common Venezuelans and Colombians) have not been easy to hear lately." ~ PAN-AMERICAN DX ~ 530 TURKS & CAICOS IS., RVC, MAY 14 1500-1710 - While tuning for TIS stations on 2 hour ferry crossing shocked to hear this station by itself in SS with fairly good signal. Certainly not needed, but fascinating to hear this one during daylight hours. [Holbrook-NC] ~ 610 TRINIDAD & TOBAGO, ICN Port of Spain MAY 3 0900 - Indian music sometimes strong through WIP in WGIR null, first time heard in NH. [Conti-NH] (nice - Jim) ~ 625.3 UNID - MAY 7 0215 - had SS talk, didn't listen long enough for any details. [Braun-DE] ~ 670 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC HIAW Santo Domingo, MAY 2 2245-2303 - LA pop music, some ranchera, ID as "Radio Guarachita", fair. [Trelford-JAM] ~ 673.5 CANADA, CKXB, Musgravetown (NF), JUN 1 0119 - EE talk, C&W music; poor, hetted by Libya-674 / Holland-675 and slopped by WRKO-680. [Connelly*D-MA] ~ 730 MEXICO XEX Mexico City, MAY 16 0530 - Nothing new but a strong signal, with a clear "XEX" ID blasting in over CKAC. [Brooker-MA] ~ 1020 TURKS & CAICOS MAY 17 0200 - fair/good, wiping out KDKA with EE gospel programs, ID at top of hour "This is the superpower Caribbean Christian Radio 1020, Turks and Caicos, British West Indies, it's 10 o'clock" into gospel program from R.G. Hardy Ministries. WRTH lists power as 20 kw, not exactly superpower. (unless the 20 kw in the WRTH was a typo, hi!) [Brooker-MA] MAY 23 0340 - Poor signals with Spanish Religious programming. [Axelrod-MB] JUN 11 0400 - Good; end of religion program in Spanish with mention of Mexico and El Paso Texas addresses, then ID and religion in English. [Conti-NH] ~ 1040 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC HION Santo Domingo, MAY 10 0221-0235 - LA pop music and talk, ID mentions Santo Domingo, fair. [Trelford-JAM] ~ 1500 MEXICO XEAI, Mexico DF, JUN 7 1020-1030+ - varied LA music styles including Cuban and marimba, 1030 SS male gives "AI" ID mentioning 50 kw, quickly buried by buttload of domestic sign-ons. [Crawford-FL] ~ 1520 COLOMBIA HJLQ Barranquilla, APR 25 0625-0658 - LA pop music, ID as "Radio Minuto", fair under WWKB. [Trelford-JAM] ~ 1560 HAITI 4VEE Port-au-Prince, APR 28 0004-0045 - Religious talk in FF and some music, fair. [Trelford-JAM] ~ 1560 UNID, MAY 23 0242 - Sounded like FF man nonstop talking under WQEW, which was carrying a hockey game, Carribbean-type music across hour, phone conversations 0310+. Haiti, or domestic? [Braun-DE] ~ TRANS-PACIFIC DX ~ 666 NEW CALEDONIA RFO Noumea (tentative) MAY 8 1232 - Jose Feliciano's "I Can't Get No Sastifaction"; woman with talk in French, into feature about old time radio in France // 738-Tahiti. Poor to very poor; KBOI-670 signal almost gone (local KPUA-670 was in a temporary silent period). [Park-HI] ~ 846 KIRIBATI R. Kiribati (tentative), JUN 6 1108 - Woman with talk; men singing Micronesian style with guitars; talk; woman with light pop song in English. A most-wanted, now audible with KHLO temporarily off the air. WRTH says sign-off is at 1000; maybe different on weekends? Fair to poor; QRM KOA- 850, unID in EE way under. [Park-HI] ~ David speaks: "Conditions are looking pretty good for some Aussie EMW reception here in the southeast. The QRN was fairly quiet here this morning, so did some trolling around the lower freqs starting around 1015 UTC. First clue was a previously unheard WEFAX on 2055, presumably Darwin but haven't verified that yet. I then went down to 1630, and while sitting on freq hoping to hear the JFK TIS thru KXBT, noted a het from 1629 fading in and out rather rapidly. Around 1030 moved up to 1638 and there was indeed a signal there, also fading rapidly. Very weak but a little audio (talking, none of hoped-for AA mx though) heard, but weaker from tune/in. Possible SAH noted at one time, so probably more than one station here. 1548 had a fair-sized carrier on it also, presumably from 4QD. Another weak carrier on 1644.2, fading, and freq varying slightly occasionally, no idea what that might be. 120 meter Aussies were coming in OK but not exceptional, and 90m PNG stations were strong today. First possible TP MW reception here, needs more work obviously but suspect it will become futile when the QRN returns to more seasonable levels." [Crawford- FL] (Keep digging! - Jim) ~ STATION NEWS ~ AUSTRALIA: Dave Valko, of Pennsylvania, reports hearing 1638 R. Lebanon APR 21 0946-1025! By the way, XEJP R Variedades did a frequency-swap with XECMQ Formato Viente Uno, the latter now on 1150. [e-mail from Paul Ormandy-NZ] ~ MONTSERRAT: Montserrat's Radio Antilles, which survived a hurricane eight years ago, will close at the end of May due to problems caused by the island's active volcano, the Caribbean News Agency reported on Friday. The Barbados- based agency, quoting a radio station official, said the board announced the decision to close to management and staff after a meeting on Wednesday. The official attributed the closing to financial problems and the difficulty of operating since the volcano forced the station to relocate. Staff at the station, which had relayed the Voice of America and the BBC to much of the Carribean, had managed to keep it operating in the months since the British island colony's Soufriere Hills volcano roared to life in July 1995. The station was forced to relocate from its base in the southern part of the island, considered most threatened by the active volcano, but was able to stay on the air and keep eight staff members working. Scientists last weekend raised the island's volcano alert level after its activity increased. It remained at the "Orange" level in Friday. Several specific monitoring sessions are designated at the end of each log (LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA, KEY WEST, etc.). All unspecified locations were mobile logs. All "common" Cubans are intentionally omitted from the logs. ~ 580 CUBA Radio Rebelde, Sancti Spiritus; 1359+ ID, good. (Krueger-FL KEY WEST 6/6) ~ 590 CUBA Radio Musical Nacional, Santa Clara, Villa Clara; as I've previously noted, this network feed remains here, ex-Rebelde. Excellent with classical music, female with ID, parallel 1000, 1400 kHz. (Krueger-FL at LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA 6/2) ~ 980 CUBA COCO, Sapo, Ciudad Habana; 1420+ "Primera Plana" program with SS pop music, man with long list of phone numbers and addresses of places such as Habana Electrico, centro Habana cocinas, Radio Centro (broadcast for any needed info--essentially an "on-air" Yelow Pages" pprogram. Later in the day, 1845+, this station was relaying a Radio Nacional de Espana transcription, punctuated briefly (to my surprise) by a local woman announcer who - in EE - said "Good afternoon" at 1852, and referenced "97.7 FM" frequency for COCO. (Krueger-FL KEY WEST 6/6) ~ 980 UNIDENTIFIED (HAITI?) looping SE/NW, definite Kreyol programming with man refering to "Haiti" and "Caribe", very poor under the Cuban. Nothing listed here. (Krueger-FL KEY WEST 6/6) ~ 990 CUBA Radio Guama (unidentified site); 1330+ fair, parallel all other audible outlets with SS pop, ID's. No 990 entry in any source that I've located. (Krueger-FL KEY WEST 6/6) ~ 1000 UNIDENTIFIED 'marimbas'; 1433+ (for over an hour of monitoring) nonstop marimba instrumental music here, very very poor, under Cuban's Radio Guama and Radio Musical, as well as the 996 kHz beacon harmonic. Several months ago I discovered Radio Nacional de Guatemala on 6180 reactivated. While 1000 kHz from Guatemala daytime seems tough (a RNG frequency), this sounds identical, and bears watching for the multitudes of DX'ers at any given time in Key West. (Krueger-FL, KEY WEST 6/6) (Need to arrive early to reserve DXing space! - Jim) ~ 1180 FLORIDA (CLANDESTINE) Radio Marti, Marathon; 1345+ mixing equal level with Radio Rebelde. A check in front of the locked gates of the VOA site a couple of hours later still had Rebelde easily audible under Marti. Kudos, Fidel. (Krueger-FL LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA 6/2) ~ 1240 BAHAMAS ZNS-2, Nassau; 1347+ Caribe-accented woman reading an endless list of local church and community event happenings on New Providence for the upcoming week, finally into gospel vocals. Really tight null with Cuban Radio 26 co-channel. Not parallel 1540, 810 ZNS outlets. (Krueger-FL at LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA 6/2) ~ 1330 CUBA Radio Jaruco (la Habana?); 1448+. Not listed for this frequency (Radio Artemisa listed), listed as on 1390-only in WRTH-97. Since I've noted this on TWO frequencies, I presume this is no longer a "Local" but rather a "Provincial" network. Powerhouse signal from Key West with TC/ID, long lineup of TeleRebelde and CubaVision TV programs for the afternoon/night. Another ID live by woman at 1459. (See 1390 kHz.) (Krueger-FL KEY WEST 6/6) ~ 1390 CUBA Radio Jaruco, la Habana; 1500+ excellent, //1330. (Krueger-FL KEY WEST 6/6) ~ 1400 CUBA Radio Musical Nacional, Matanzas; fair, parallel 590, 1000. First time log of this freq for me. (Krueger-FL at LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA 6/2) ~ 1540 BAHAMAS ZNS-1, Nassau; 1330+ "Good Morning Bahamas" lame program with M&W with news, soul music. Seriously QRM'ed abruptly (see below) by Cuban from 1400. (Krueger-FL at LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA 6/2) ~ 1540 CUBA unidentified (Radio Sagua?); *1400 suddenly on, atop ZNS-1 with Cuban merengue, badly overmodulated, chipper SS man and woman live between most songs, but never could cull any ID (didn't seem to be any, actually). Suddenly off 1450*, leaving ZNS-1 in the clear again. Not to reappear through 1520 GMT monitoring. (Krueger-FL at LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA 6/2) ~ 1610 FLORIDA (PIRATE) unidentified, Miami; 1456+ impassioned Kreyol radio drama, complete with sound effects (certainly a transcript or satellite feed) nonstop. First appeared under--then overtook--the disco pirate. Peaking on the Palmetto Expressway/826 around the US-1 exit, but still weak around the Broward line; a pretty big signal. Could this be David Crawford's "Radio Tropicale"? (Krueger-FL 6/7) ~ 1610 UNIDENTIFIED; 1215+ threshold, seemingly gospel vocals, impossible to tell if EG or Kreyol. Presume much too late for Caribbean Beacon, Anguilla. Maybe the Miami Kreyol pirate with Sunday pxing, or something totally different. (Krueger-FL at Bob Wilkner's QTH, Margate 6/8) ~ 96.7 MHz FM CUBA Radio Rebelde (la Habana?); STEREO don't recall this in any FM listing, first noted during my LONG KEY STATE RECREATION AREA session on 6/2, fair level with canned rambling by Raul Castro Ruiz followed by all of the provincial leaders regarding respective economic reform compliances, parallel 1180, 620 et. al., my first Cuban FM'er. As it turned out, this ended up being an absolutely huge signal throughout the Keys (from Marathon south). Audible to north Key Largo, albeit poorly. This was my primary car station for five days: neat to hear Rebelde in full-stereo. I took Monday off to help with a number of necessary projects at my mother's house. One benefit of this is that I got to do some DXing on Sunday and Monday evenings. Sunday night between 8.45 and 11.15 p.m. EDT was very "hopped up" to Latin America during a mini-DXpedition that I did from the lighthouse in Chatham. Many of the low-band (under 1200 kHz) channels had multiple-station Latin American pile-ups. In fact, a main limiting factor was co-channel interference by South Americans to other South Americans (rather than problems from domestic QRM). Some of the jumbles took a while to untangle and often a clear-cut dominant was hard to find. A Brazilian came in on 720, but I didn't determine the exact ID (two stations are possible). The Chatham site is certainly "primo" for South America. The fact that the best Trans-Atlantic was Lesotho-1197 (!) underscored the auroral nature of conditions at the time. I heard a few more stations at the Harwich house before turning in for a night's sleep. On Monday (19 MAY / EDT: 8-9 p.m.), I did a quick on-the-way-home DX stop at North Scituate Beach. Some of the North Africans and Spaniards were coming in well, then South Americans started to show. The highlight was Rio de Janeiro, Brazil rising above the rabble on 860. The N. Scituate site has been used successfully before for Brazilian receptions just after sunset during moderately auroral conditions. Logs will be issued soon. DX FILES: HONDURAS 4930.62, FM Internacional, 0420+ on May 25, xlnt w/ SP ballads, annoying canned ID's by M atop songs and between. Two very slightly different canned ID's 0500 and 0530, (partenthesis are variants of the phrases immediately prior to those beforehand, as heard on the 0530 ID from the top of my head, so not 100% accurate) "Esta es HRQO2, Radio Internacional, en San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Transmitiendo noventa uno punto nueve [91.9], frecuencia modulada (FM estereo), mil ciento viente [1120] kHz (amplitud modulada) y cuatro mil noventa trienta en la banda tropical (en la banda internacional)..." Whatever, interesting to hear the MW and FM frequencies (both possible from Florida-- latter on summer e-skip). Maybe the MW/FM frequencies--and IDing as "FM Internacional"-- have been published in previous logs or QSL's, if so I just missed them. Final canned s/off anmt at 0551 ment'd the "barrio" (uncopied) that the station is located at, 0553* w/out NA. Probably old-hat for Don Moore, eh?
